Frozen raspberries contaminated with the Norovirus have been imported to the Maldives, the Food and Drug Authority warned on Wednesday, announcing a recall of the ‘Himbeeren’ brand from the market.

The contaminated products were only distributed to resorts, according to the FDA, which was alerted to the contaminated products by Europe’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.

Norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain.

New school to open in Malé next year

A new school is due to open in Malé next year to cope with the overcrowding of schools in the capital.

The education ministry is now accepting enrolment in the new ‘Izzuddeen School’ to be opened in the premises of the old Male English School. New students from grades two to six are expected to register by writing to the ministry and enrolment will take place in order of application, the ministry said on Tuesday.

The school will teach single-session for grades one to six next year. Grades seven to 10 will start every year from 2021.

A new building of Dharumavantha School is also planned to be built near the old MES building. The southern waterfront area is already home to another high school and two college campuses. The ministry stirred controversy last month after it announced that students registered in Malé will be prioritised for enrolment next year.

Ex-police chief shares information about Dr Afrasheem murder

Jumhooree Party MP for Thimarafushi Abdulla Riyaz shared information about the October 2012 murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali with the presidential commission on deaths and disappearances on Tuesday.

The former police chief said he answered all questions posed by members of the inquiry commission.

In May 2015, Riyaz was interrogated by the police over comments he had made about the murder of the lawmaker and moderate scholar, which occurred while he was the commissioner of police. Riyaz had said that he would reveal information on Dr Afrasheem’s murder “when the time comes”
