Islamic ministry orders TV station to stop programme on sorcery
In a letter sent to Sangu TV, the ministry noted that the Fiqh academy had issued a fatwa advising the media not to broadcast programmes that encourage the practice of sorcery as it a grave sin prohibited in Islam. The academy had warned that such programmes could “lead the public astray from the clear path of Islam.”

After raid, Sangu TV resumes live transmission
Sangu TV was forced off-air after the police confiscated all of the station’s hard disks during a raid in the early hours of Friday. Ibrahim Waheed ‘Asward,’ Sangu TV’s managing director, said the police have not returned the broadcasting equipment. The station used hard disks from its staff to resume broadcasting at 8:00pm last night.

Maldives police deny obstructing press freedom
At a midnight press conference, the police said it “regrets” accusations of “obstructing media” following a raid on Sangu TV offices. Assistant Commissioner Nawaz said police officers have “not committed any act to date that could obstruct press freedom”.

Maldives police raid private TV station at midnight
The court warrant authorising the raid on Sangu TV stated that the police are seeking evidence related to a “video message uploaded to YouTube threatening to kill the president of the Maldives and senior officials of the state, and to carry out terrorist attacks.”

MP Ahmed Mahloof said an opposition supporter had removed Sangu TV’s microphone from the podium at the opposition’s campaign office or Haruge, resulting in a confrontation between “gangsters” who supported the TV channel and opposition supporters. Sangu TV however said the group were its staff.
