First Lady Fathmath Ibrahim launched Friday night a volunteer programme for President Abdulla Yameen’s re-election campaign at a ruling party rally on Gan island in Laamu atoll.

The first lady became the first volunteer, state media reported, after which she was presented with a registration card by campaign manager Adley Ismail, also managing director of the state fisheries corporation.

Speaking at the rally, dubbed ‘We are with Yameen,’ MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla challenged the opposition to stop Yameen from carrying the southern atoll, which he vowed would deliver the highest margin of victory for the president in September’s polls.

Previous administrations neglected Laamu atoll’s development despite opportunities owing to the relatively large size of its islands, said Abdul Raheem, the ruling party’s deputy leader.

More than MVR200,000 (US$12,970) per person was invested in Laamu atoll in the past four years, Economic Development Minister Mohamed Saeed said as Deputy Speaker ‘Reeko’ Moosa Manik accused opposition leaders of pursuing self-interest in lieu of political goals.
