Parliament approves five nominees to tax authority’s board

The parliament today approved five nominees proposed by President Abdulla Yameen to the board of the tax authority, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

The new members appointed to MIRA’s board of directors are Ahmed Faiz Mohamed, from Laamu Maavah Asrafeehiya, Hassan Waheed, from Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo Kudhimaage, Aishath Asha Ali, from Henveiru Eastward in Malé, Faseeh Zahir, from Gaaf Alif Dhaandhoo Seasonge, and Leena Mohamed Zahir Hussain, from Henveiru Neelvilla.

Faiz and Faseeh were approved with 57 votes in favour while Waheed and Asha were approved with 56 votes in favour. Leena was approved with 54 votes in favour. All five were approved with unanimous consent.

Waheed and Faiz are also current members of MIRA’s board.

Speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed did not call for a vote on the sixth nominee, Fathmath Farheeza, from Seenu Maradhoo Zephire, after the five vacant seats on MIRA’s board were filled.

The nominees were evaluated by the parliament’s independent institutions committee. The president’s office selected the six nominees from among several interested candidates who applied for the posts last month.

The five-year terms of five current board members expired on August 2.
