Candidates from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party won Saturday’s by-election for two vacant seats on the Haa Alif Filladhoo island council.

According to provisional results, MDP candidates Abdulla Riyaz and Mohamed Shiyad topped the polls with 352 votes and 289 votes followed by opposition Progressive Party of Maldives candidates Mohamed Moosa (283 votes) and Mariyam Zoona (184 votes).

Of the 783 eligible voters, 575 people cast their ballots. Voting took place on the island as well as the capital Malé.

The by-election was called last month after the resignation of former council vice president Mohamed Jaufar and council member Mohamed Nafiu.
