MDP congress, false testimony and virtual autopsy

New in brief from Tuesday, April 8.

Following a proposed merger with the Democrats, the opposition MDP's national council is due to decide on convening an extraordinary congress with deliberations scheduled for next Saturday.

Police declined to investigate complaints from Supreme Court Justice Azmiralda Zahir over alleged false testimony by Anti-Corruption Commission President Adam Shamil, who was accused of providing a pretext for her suspension by the judicial watchdog.

A “virtual autopsy” concluded that suicide was the cause of death for Zakiyya Moosa, a 50-year-old woman found dead in Noonu Holhudhoo last September.

The Bank of Maldives apologised after a planned maintenance "took longer than expected" and caused disruptions to card services, ATMs and POS machines. The apology followed a flurry of complaints on social media over unexplained deductions from bank accounts.

The construction ministry awarded an MVR 830 million (US$ 54 million) project to the state-owned Road Development Corporation to rebuild the link road between the interconnected islands of Addu City.
