Tobacco ban, no-confidence motion and honorary doctorate

Amendments to the tobacco control law proposed an age verification requirement for businesses selling cigarettes or tobacco products. The government-sponsored bill was submitted to parliament for the implementation of a generational ban to prohibit smoking for persons born after 2007 by making sales illegal.

The 12-member opposition MDP parliamentary group submitted a no-confidence motion against Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen over alleged interference with a police investigation to protect nephews accused of involvement in a young woman’s unexplained fall from a nine-storey building on April 18. 

President Muizzu was awarded an honorary doctorate by the International Islamic University of Malaysia. In a keynote lecture, he called for the “revival of the Muslim world’s scientific heritage.” Before concluding the official visit, the president visited the Petronas twin towers and met with the founders of the Berjaya Corporation and the Sunway Group.  

The High Court rejected an appeal against the detention of the former immigration chief for the duration of an upcoming trial on corruption and bribery charges. In a separate appeal, the High Court overturned a travel ban imposed on the former MDP’s government state minister for housing, Akram Kamalludeen, who had been barred from traveling overseas over an ongoing anti-corruption probe into the awarding of land plots and housing units. 

After looking into MVR 1.4 billion (US$ 90 million) to HDC by various private businesses, parliament recommended barring companies with unpaid dues from bidding for government projects and contracts. 

A 49-year-old man was arrested for breaking a glass food showcase in a Malé café.

HDC sought interested parties to run a health clinic on the industrial and waste collection island of Thilafushi.

Women’s Development Committees need to work together to increase women’s participation in political life, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef said during the inauguration of the Anhenunge Salla women’s forum, calling for bipartisan efforts to increase women’s representation in political roles.

STELCO  conducted a three-day women-only electrician training course with 16 participants. As more than 300 women expressed interest, follow-up training batches will be held, the state utility said.
