Shameem assault, victim impact and housing project

News in brief from Tuesday, April 22.

Seven men charged over the assault of former prosecutor general Hussain Shameem near his home in January last year were acquitted of attempted murder charges with the criminal court citing contradictions in the timeline of CCTV footage submitted as evidence.

The Hulhumalé court sentenced a 51-year-old man to 54 years in prison for sexually abusing a girl over a 10-year period, starting when she was just-eight-years old. For the first time, the judge heard a victim impact statement describing the severe mental and physical effects of the abuse.

The finance ministry invited pre-qualification applications for the design and build of over 12,000 housing units in 57 islands.

Dr Salah bin Muhammad al-Budair, the imam of the Grand Masjid of Medina, paid a courtesy call on President Muizzu.

President Muizzu discussed topics including vape ban, higher education, tobacco tariffs, and a generational smoking ban in a new podcast hosted by Naza Naseem, a member of the Presidential Youth Advisory Board.

Police statistics showed a spike in traffic accidents in the Greater Malé Region. Outside of the capital, the highest number of accidents and the only fatality this year were recorded in Addu City, which accounted for 36 percent of accidents nationwide.

During a working session, President Muizzu urged ministers and heads of state-owned enterprises to complete infrastructure projects on schedule and to keep the public informed with regular updates.
