Manufactured misconduct, Addu protest and vape seizures

News in brief from Thursday, March 6.

Following her suspension by the judicial watchdog, Justice Azmiralda Zahir denounced allegations of ethical misconduct as an attempt to intimidate and exert influence over the Supreme Court. The suspensions came after the Anti-Corruption Commission launched a criminal investigation, the details of which have not been revealed.

The head of the state utility Fenaka Corporation was greeted with protests as he arrived in Addu City over persistent power outages.

The police raided an illegal vape business and confiscated 84 cartridges. In a separate incident, Customs seized 400 vaping devices smuggled into the country.

AG Usham denied failing to respond within a 10-day deadline set by the Supreme Court on a constitutional challenge to anti-defection provisions. The angry denial came after the petitioner in the case asked justices to hold the attorney general in contempt of court.
