President’s podcast, student loans and MTCC projects

News in brief from Thursday, March 27.

In the first episode of a new podcast launched with President Muizzu, he spoke about enlisting the military to expedite work on a new thalassemia centre, plans to impose a generation ban on tobacco use, and US$ 150 million remitted to banks since the enforcement of mandatory exchange requirements.

A one percent administrative fee on student loans will be scrapped, President Muizzu announced, after issuing a directive to ensure that all education and training loans are shariah-compliant.

MTCC was contracted to build an immigration office on Uligan island in the northernmost atoll to “enhance immigration services on the island, supporting operational expansion and improved accessibility.” The state-owned company was also awarded projects to build police stations on five islands and police accommodation in Fuvahmulah.

A soldier was arrested for illegally taking out cigarettes from a duty-free shop at the Velana International Airport. Mohamed Aiman, 23, who works at airport security, was remanded for 10 days.

Forty-six cases of gender-based violence and domestic violence were reported in February.
