Minister's flat, MDP protest and presidential jetty

Higher Education Minister Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed announced he would relinquish a social housing flat after a public outcry over the discovery of the former housing minister and his wife’s name on a verified list of recipients. There were “countless families” who were more deserving, Haidar said.

MDP protesters took to the streets of Malé and called for President Muizzu’s resignation behind police and army barricades blocking entry to the green zone. 

Speaking at the opening of the renovated presidential jetty – which incorporated elements honouring Maldivian culture and the designs from past iterations – President Muizzu announced plans to redevelop a section of Malé’s outer road from the Henveiru ferry terminal to the fish market. The road will be widened to four lanes through reclamation and sheet piling, he revealed.

An alleged rape victim from Thaa Madifushi was escorted off the island under police protection following unrest over the suicide of the accused 63-year-old rapist after the man personally reported the allegations to the police.

Two protesters accused of assaulting police officers were detained during ongoing demonstrations in Noonu Holhudhoo over alleged police negligence in investigating the death of 50-year-old Zakiyya Moosa.

The ruling party’s steering committee for the Central Hithadhoo constituency rebuked their MP Ahmed Azaan Marzouq for defying a three-line whip to vote for reducing the Supreme Court bench. After walking out before Wednesday's vote, Azaan called the legal changes unconstitutional.

A group of lawyers penned a letter to the Judicial Service Commission seeking clarification on how Ali Abdul Latheef – the representative elected by lawyers to the judicial watchdog – voted on the suspension of three Supreme Court justices.

The Health Protection Agency announced inspections for adherence to the new tobacco control law and regulations, cautioning smokers, advertisers, retailers, and exporters to ensure compliance.

The Maldives National Climate Action Plan was submitted to the UN climate change body, outlining a comprehensive climate strategy through 2035 and detailing both mitigation targets to reduce emissions and adaptation strategies to build resilience across sectors like energy, water, agriculture, tourism, and fisheries.
