CEO resignation, phone seizure and prison suicide

Maldives Development Bank CEO Noel Gregor Paterson-Jones resigned just seven months after his appointment to the newly-formed bank that has yet to officially open. The former finance minister called the project “a failure waiting to happen” and characterised the departure as a “glaring symbol of mismanagement, incompetence.”

The mobile phone of sacked immigration controller Mohamed Shamaan Waheed's wife was confiscated as the criminal court imposed travel bans on two suspects involved in the alleged migrant worker extortion scheme. The police revealed the identities of four immigration officers who were arrested along with Shamaan.

Ibrahim Shamweel, a 23-year-old man serving an 18-month sentence in Maafushi prison, committed suicide. Prison officers found him hanging from the ceiling of his cell at 4:20pm.
