The government sought a consultant for the survey and engineering design for a proposed 15km bridge to link Hithadhoo and Hulhumeedhoo in Addu City. The bid announcement came after the end-of-February deadline pledged by President Muizzu in his address to parliament last month. It is unclear why the government is seeking a new consultant after an Egyptian contractor enlisted in February 2024 concluded initial surveys nearly a year ago. “The comprehensive design of the link may extend beyond the bridge itself to include associated highway link road, coastal, and shore protection elements if required,” according to the terms of reference.
According to the State Electricity Company, power usage in Malé and Hulhumalé on the first day of Ramadan was down significantly to 78 megawatts at the peak time compared to an average of 100 megawatts before. The decrease was attributed to the rainy weather and closure of schools and offices.
