Government-sponsored legislation on conducting public referendums was submitted to parliament, outlining the processes for both the president and the legislature to put proposed laws or matters of national significance to a public vote. According to the bill, a poll must be organised within 45 days or three months after the referendum question is made public.
The Gulhifalhu Citizens Association urged recipients of land plots not to sign new agreements after registrations issued by the previous government were cancelled. Previous ownership agreements for plots awarded under the Binveriya scheme were cancelled to ensure compliance with the 2002 land law, the housing minister said, citing provisions that prohibit granting publicly-owned land to individuals who own property. The previous agreement only required recipients to relinquish land under 600 square feet in the Malé region. The amended agreement states that recipients must relinquish land owned anywhere in the country.
At a press briefing by the opposition MDP's economic committee, former finance minister Ibrahim Ameer accused the government of using state reserves to make advance payments for the Rasmalé land reclamation, President Muizzu's flagship project to develop a new "eco-city" on a manmade island south of Malé. The government plans to finance the project through US$ 600 million worth of loans to be taken by three state-owned companies, Ameer alleged, questioning whether such large sums could be secured.
