New justices, bottling plant and ocean accounts

Abdulla Hameed and Mohamed Saleem took the oath of office as new Supreme Court justices. The president formally appointed the pair shortly after parliament approved their nominations to fill two vacancies on the bench. 

The Hoarafushi council threatened legal action against Fenaka for halting a water bottling plant project developed under a joint venture agreement. The council accused the state-owned utility of terminating staff ahead of a planned launch in July. The opposition MDP echoed the council's concerns and condemned the sackings. But according to Fenaka, the employees were laid off because the company could not afford to pay them before operations could begin. Despite construction of the plant's building, some interior work remains unfinished and most of the machinery have yet to be assembled and installed, Fenaka said, assuring that the MVR 36.7 million (US$ 2.3 million) project will continue. Work will resume next month after an assessment by a technical team and staff will be hired upon completion, the company said.

The environment minister unveiled the “National Implementation Roadmap for Ocean Accounts 2025 - 2030” on the sidelines of the UN Ocean Conference in France. The roadmap will “enable evidence-based strategic planning for Maldives’ development and conservation goals,” he said.

Khidhumaiy, an NGO affiliated with the late Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed, raised funds to build mosques in Bangladesh and Maldives in his memory after his untimely death on Monday.

Nine detainees in pre-trial detention have been released with electronic surveillance tags, the Prosecutor General’s office revealed. Of 121 requests from suspects under indefinite definition, 20 were rejected and 92 requests were pending a police threat assessment.

The Maldives National University opened registration for the International Conference on Innovations in Engineering, Science and Technology for Sustainable Development due to take place in October.
