New commissioner, Raudh charges and cannabis seizure

Ismail Naveen, who became acting police chief after the resignation of former commissioner Ali Shujau in April, was appointed as the new Commissioner of Police. He was chosen from among three candidates who stood for the vacant post.

The Prosecutor General’s office pressed charges against Raudh Ahmed Zilal for failing to assist Hawwa Yumn Rasheed after her unexplained fall from a nine-story building. Failure to provide assistance (article 618 of the penal code) carries a prison sentence of one month and six days. If the 22-year-old is found guilty, the one month that he spent in remand detention will be deducted from the sentence.

Customs seized 18kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of MVR 26 million (US$ 1.6 million). The drugs were concealed inside plant pots in an airfreighted shipment.

Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif was announced as the global brand ambassador for Maldives tourism. The collaboration is part of a Summer Sale Campaign targeting key markets including India. Tourist arrivals from India have yet to recover after a boycott campaign led to a 37 percent drop in 2024.

Funeral prayers for Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed, who passed away in Malaysia on Monday, will take place in mosques nationwide after Friday prayers, the Islamic ministry announced.
