Former sports minister Mahloof defended his record after an audit of the sports ministry during his tenure from 2018 to 2023 uncovered corruption and financial mismanagement, including contractors fraudulently providing a used vehicle while charging for a new one using falsified documents, the irregular awarding of an MVR 38.55 million (US$ 2.5 million) football training school project, and deliberate fragmentation of MVR 154.28 million worth of projects to avoid oversight. According to Mahloof, the contractor fraud had been referred to the police and the school project began during the preceding administration. The audit findings were minimal considering the scale of operations with 576 projects carried out over five years, he contended. Other issues flagged in the audit include MVR 6.54 million in unregistered assets, MVR 442,201 in missing equipment unreported to authorities, excessive advance payments of 55 percent against the 15 percent legal limit, and abandoned projects requiring additional state funds for restoration. Multiple cases were referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission and police for criminal investigation over alleged violations of budget limits and financial regulations.
