Housing complaints, Kelaa resorts and Maduvvari stabbing

The Malé City Council offered help for disqualified applicants from the previous administration's social housing scheme to submit complaints by the extended deadline of April 15.

After the president excluded a 325-hectare area from the jurisdiction of Haa Alif Kelaa last week, the tourism ministry invited bids from investors interested in developing a resort by reclaiming more than 24 hectares from the island's lagoon. A separate announcement was made seeking bids to develop a resort on a 10-hectare island to be created in the lagoon of Kaafu Kaashidhoo.

A man who stabbed his brother in Raa Maduvvari on Monday night had been sentenced to 10 years in prison over a similar knife attack in 2019, Adhadhu reported. Ismail Asif attacked his older brother Mohamed Mueen during an argument between the siblings last night. The victim was reportedly left with two wounds on his head. It is unclear why Asif had been released following his conviction in 2022.

The location for a planned juvenile detention centre with the capacity to hold 700 minors has been changed from Dhaalu Vaanee to new land to be reclaimed from the Giraaavaru lagoon near Malé, a state minister for homeland security told state media, citing operational and transportation costs.

Some 762 traffic accidents have been reported so far this year with theft (667 cases) and drugs (378 cases) the most commonly reported crimes.
