Two key defence witnesses refused to testify as former president Yameen’s bribery and money laundering trial resumed after more than eight months. The judge scheduled a hearing for next month to give them time to reconsider after defence lawyers declined to seek an order to compel them to appear under police custody. The witnesses, both of whom are now senior government officials, were to be called to back Yameen’s assertion that an alleged US$ 1 million bribe to secure a resort lease had been a legitimate currency exchange transaction. Charges withdrawn in 2023 against ‘Krik’ Riza, a businessman charged as Yameen’s co-defendant, will not be resubmitted as the police have not been able to conduct voice analysis on an alleged recording of his conversation with a former police chief, prosecutors told the court.
A 21-year-old woman was found unconscious after her family called the police upon hearing screams from her room. She is undergoing treatment at the Hulhumalé hospital, according to the police, who told the media that there was no one else in the room when police officers arrived.
