Lamborghini crash, bridge progress and presidential auction

A Lamborghini on the Hulhulé-Hulhumalé link road collided with roadside solar panels and overturned at around 8:42am on Friday. Police said an adult and a child were in the vehicle at the time and were taken to Tree Top Hospital. Neither sustained serious injuries. The driver was identified as Hassan Rifau, the CEO of Hawks Pvt Ltd, a fuel importer and distributor. Police later said Rifau’s license had been suspended. 

The final segment of the Thilamalé Bridge linking Vilimalé and Malé was joined on Saturday. Once completed, the bridge will connect Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.

Police arrested 31-year-old volleyball player Ahmed Fazil from Vaavu Keyodhoo in a drug operation on Thursday. Police said raids on two houses linked to Fazil led to the seizure of 265 grams of drugs. The Criminal Court remanded him in custody for 10 days.

The housing ministry began verifying applications for its “Housing For All” programme by cross-checking applicants’ information with records held by government institutions and councils. The ministry said applicants will be notified of any discrepancies through the ‘Boahiyaavahikan’ online portal and given seven calendar days to provide supporting information or documents.

Police arrested two men, Mohamed Fazeel and Abshar Rasheed, in connection with a scam in which MVR92,000 (US$5,966) was stolen from a victim who clicked a link sent in a Telegram group and shared an OTP code. Both men were remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court. Police urged the public to verify the legitimacy of online transactions before proceeding.

Former President Abdulla Yameen called on local councils to oppose a bill that would allow the government to take over land and open islands to foreign and joint-venture investments. Speaking at an event marking the 60th anniversary of Thinadhoo’s resettlement, Yameen said councils should offer long-term land leases to make investments in the islands more attractive to foreign investors.

The President's Office auctioned off several pieces of furniture used by former administrations, including a historic table used by five former presidents, Adhadhu reported. Other items included a desk used by former vice presidents, a coffee table, chairs and mobile phones.

Opposition to the dismissal of more than 100 employees from Fenaka’s Addu branch intensified, with the Addu mayor describing the terminations as politically motivated and calling on residents to protest. Meanwhile, an official Fenaka community group on Viber was turned into a platform for opposing the dismissals. A superadmin renamed the group “Against Unjustly Firing 189 Employees”.
