Parliament approves pay cuts for city councillors
Since President Abdulla Yameen assumed power in November 2013, the government had gradually stripped the Malé City Council of its authority and staff. Nine of the 11 Malé City councilors and all six members of the Addu City Council belong to the MDP. The pay cuts were recommended by the parliament’s public accounts committee after the council’s functions were transferred to the housing ministry.

The civil court will deliberate today a complaint lodged by jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed’s siblings over restrictions on prison visits. Nasheed’s lawyers are also complaining of infrequent access.

MP reveals details of meeting with President Yameen
President Yameen urged MPs to respect the outcome of an investigation into an alleged assassination attempt in September, and warned them MDP may move to exploit the government’s vulnerability, an MP present at the closed-door meeting said. Yameen also expressed confidence in his vice president.

Toddler dies of injuries after falling into open elevator shaft
“She died because of serious brain injuries suffered from the fall. The impact of the fall had caused internal bleeding of the brain. Furthermore her skull was fractured in multiple areas causing some of the fractured bones to go into the brain,” said Dr Abdulla Niyaz, chief medical officer at ADK.

Government’s estimate for 2015 economic growth unrealistic, says World Bank

The government’s forecast for economic growth is 8.5 percent, but both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expect the Maldivian economy to grow by 5 percent this year.

MDP hits back at EC’s condemnation of resolution backing targeted sanctions
The Elections Commission said that a political party that receives state funding should not be allowed to call for sanctions against government officials. The MDP’s national council had passed a resolution calling for targeted sanctions if the government continues to detain President Mohamed Nasheed in defiance of a UN rights panel judgment declaring his imprisonment arbitrary and illegal.

Japan grants US$20m for digital broadcasting network project
“With the adoption of the ISDB network, Maldivian broadcasters can cost efficiently send their broadcasting signals across Maldives with ease,” Home Minister Umar Naseer said after signing the agreement with the the Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA). ISDB-T is a technical standard for digital broadcasting developed by Japanese and Brazilian experts.
