A magistrate has been convicted of conspiring to kidnap President Abdulla Yameen by forging a warrant for his arrest over the Maldives’ biggest corruption scandal. Ahmed Nihan, a senior judge at the Maamigili magistrate court, was sentenced to 17 years in jail.

Sheikh Imran sentenced to 12 years in prison

Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla has been found guilty of terrorism and sentenced to 12 years in prison.Imran was accused of inciting violence at a historic 20,000-strong anti-government demonstration on May 1 last year. He was charged under article two of the 1990 Anti-Terrorism Act, which states that promoting fear amongst the public or causing destruction of property are acts of terrorism.

CNM journalist barred from Imran’s terrorism trial

Misbah Abbas, senior desk editor at CNM, told The Maldives Independent that he was barred days after he reported Judge Bari threatening journalists over allegedly unfair coverage of the Adhaalath Party leader’s terrorism trial. Despite registering for yesterday’s hearing, Misbah was told that “the judge has decided not to let the CNM journalists inside.”
