A conversation on the MUO’s plan for a transitional government
Hussain Shameem, the MUO’s shadow cabinet minister for constitutional reform, speaks about details of the opposition’s plans for the transition and beyond

The Maldives United Opposition, a broad coalition of opposition parties and top ex-government officials, has vowed to remove President Abdulla Yameen from power and establish an interim government ahead of the 2018 presidential election.
The Maldives Independent spoke to Hussain Shameem, a former deputy prosecutor general and the MUO’s shadow cabinet minister for constitutional reform, about details of the opposition’s plans for the transition and beyond.
Xiena Saeed: The MUO is advocating for a transitional government. Why do we need a transitional government?
Hussain Shameem: To put it briefly, Maldivians do no trust President Abdulla Yameen’s administration. They’ve hijacked the whole state. The people do not trust institutions to uphold democratic principles and system of checks and balances. There is no public confidence in the judiciary and the elections commission, because of the actions of the people representing these institutions.
