A 59-year-old taxi driver was stabbed to death in the capital’s suburb Hulhumalé on Wednesday night.
Gasim Hassan was found lying in a pool of blood near the central park with stab wounds in his head and hands.
According to the police, the victim passed away around 9:50pm at the Hulhumalé hospital, just under an hour after he was found.
Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed appealed to the public to “provide us with any information useful to detecting this heinous crime.”
Gasim’s taxi cab was found near the park. According to friends who spoke to Mihaaru, the inside of the car was also splattered with blood.
“I think someone tried to rob him because there was blood inside the car. We think that he was attacked inside the taxi,” one man was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Gasim carried money in a book that he kept inside the cab, his friends said. On the night of murder, he had at least US$200 worth of Maldivian Rufiyaa.
