Police officers failed to catch a group who hurled some 15 bottles of whiskey onto the streets of Malé last night but managed to seize their car after a chase.
A police spokesman said no arrests have been made yet.
An unknown number of people went on a rampage in a car throwing the bottles in six different areas of the city. Local media said shattered bottles had been spotted near the southwest harbor, Dharubaaruge multi-purpose hall, and on Ameenee Magu.
“We seized the car, but whoever was in the car fled before we could arrest them. We are on the lookout for the suspects,” the police said.
The car stopped near the Olympus theater on Majeedhee Magu.
Popular opposition-aligned Raajje TV said atleast 15 bottles were thrown onto the streets from a black car speeding along Malé’s narrow congested streets.
Police officers cleaned up the shattered glass and alcohol last night.
Consuming alcohol carries a jail term of up to three months and 40 lashes.
Police routinely seize alcohol in the capital.
