Contractor chosen for ‘China-Maldives Friendship Bridge’

The bidding process was launched in Beijing last Tuesday with a team of 11 experts evaluating bids from three companies shortlisted by the Chinese government. They were China Railway Major Bridge Engineering, CCCC Second Harbour Engineering, and Sichuan Road and Bridge Construction. The housing ministry has not revealed the chosen contractor.

Tourist arrivals increase in August as occupancy rate continues to fall

After registering a four percent decline in July, arrivals from China increased by 7.8 percent in August despite a slowdown in the Chinese economy and a surprise devaluation of the Yuan. China remains the largest source market for tourists to the Maldives with a 31.6 percent market share.

Defence minister Moosa Ali Jaleel has been summoned to parliament to answer whether a Chinese Yuan class 335 submarine entered Maldivian territorial waters between March 31 and May 22. MDP MP Eva Abdulla submitted the question to parliament yesterday to summon the retired major general for minister’s question time.
