The civil court on Thursday ordered a Maldivian to pay more than MVR140,000 (US$9,000) to a tourist who was injured in a jet ski accident at the Jumeirah Vitaveli resort in 2014.
The local was instructing a foreigner who was riding the jet ski when it collided with the Singaporean tourist.
According to local media, Linda Lee asked for 25 camels and medical expenses, citing Islamic sharia compensation rules. But the judge awarded her S$12,500 and MVR1,681 as reimbursement for costs borne due to the injury, including hospital fees, a month’s lost wages and expenses incurred by cutting her vacation short.
The court decided the Maldivian instructor was negligent and at fault for the accident. He was ordered to pay within two months.
