JJ Robinson is advisor to the Maldives Independent. He was editor of Minivan News (Maldives Independent’s precursor) from 2009-2013, and went on to spend eight years in media development supporting more than a hundred outlets operating in autocracies all over the world, from Belarus to Venezuela. He is the author of Maldives: Islamic Republic, Tropical Autocracy (Hurst 2015). He tells anyone who will listen that mashuni roshi is the world’s best breakfast.
