Two dead in speedboat accident

A Maldivian captain and Bangladeshi crewmember died in a speedboat accident Thursday night when the Ithaafushi 3 and Ithaafushi 5 speedboats from the eponymous resort collided six miles west of the island of Gulhi in Malé atoll.

A Maldivian captain and Bangladeshi crewmember died in a speedboat accident Thursday night.

The Ithaafushi 3 and Ithaafushi 5 speedboats from the eponymous resort collided six miles west of Gulhi island in Malé atoll, according to police.

The Bangladeshi man was among eight people who were rushed to Malé by the coastguard. He died while undergoing treatment at the ADK hospital.

The Maldivian captain of one of the speedboats, identified as 37-year-old Mohamed Ahmed from Kudahuvadhoo island, was lost after the collision. Twelve hours later, coastguard divers found his body at a depth of 45 meters.

Mohamed Ahmed is reportedly survived by a wife and three young children.
