A Maldivian cleric has warned of “divine wrath” for those who plant false evidence.

“In any Muslim country, whoever engages in planting false evidence and giving false testimony against someone is subjecting themselves to the wrath of Allah. You are never forced to trick people. You must escape, even if it means you have to resign,” Sheikh Ali Zaid tweeted Wednesday.

His comments came hours after police announced they were seeking prosecution of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and two Supreme Court judges for destroying evidence.

Zaid has previously stirred controversy for claiming that 70 percent of people on an unnamed island do not fast during Ramadan. He has also called for the beheading of Muslims who advocate same-sex marriage.
