A state hospital has launched an internal investigation after a child’s condition worsened while she was in its care, reports local media.

Doctors at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital treated a six-year old last month for an ordinary fever as she showed inflammation of the throat and tongue. She was admitted to the hospital, her condition worsening until she could not move.

The father said he requested help from a doctor after her condition deteriorated, but was told off by the doctor for exaggerating. He then flew his daughter to Sri Lanka for treatment.

Doctors there said nerve inflammation caused loss of blood to the brain and restricted nerve signals.

IGMH’s public relations director Ahmed Mausoom said the hospital was looking into the case despite not receiving an official complaint from the family.

“We’ve officially started a probe into the case. We’re looking into the related files and checking how it went,” he said to Mihaaru.

The girl will need treatment for a year, said her father Fuad Ahmed.

Fuad said she was still unable to move her limbs or open her mouth and eyes, and that he planned to go to court over the hospital’s negligence.
