Two young men were stabbed in the capital’s suburb Hulhumalé around 6:40pm last night. One of the victims underwent an operation at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé.

According to local media, the pair were stabbed in a gang fight that occurred in a park near the main mosque on the reclaimed artificial island.

A police spokesperson told The Maldives Independent that its not clear whether the two men had assaulted each other or were stabbed by a third party. Both men were initially taken to the Hulhumalé hospital for treatment of minor injuries, he said.

But the IGMH media official said a knife had sliced through the stomach all the way to the back of one of the victims, a 21-year-old who was brought to Malé around 2:00am.

“Doctors finished operating at dawn. The patient is conscious, however, and doctors said they will know more after 24 hours,” the official said.

No arrests have been made yet.

Seven men, including two migrant workers, were murdered this year.

Violent crime has typically been limited to the capital city Malé, but two Maldivians were killed in Addu City and Laamu atoll Mundoo this year. In June, a Bangladeshi national was discovered dead with injuries in Laamu atoll Gan.
