Man falls to death during suspected robbery in Malé

A 29-year-old Maldivian man died after falling from a building in Malé in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to the police, the man fell from the second floor of the Sunny Coast house in the Maafanu ward of the capital around 3:20am.

“As of now, we know that the man does not reside in the building,” a police spokesman said, declining to confirm local reports that the individual fell during an attempted robbery.

Local media has identified the deceased as Ahmed Afraz from the southern Addu City. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

The police spokesperson said further details could not be provided at the current stage of the investigation.

In November 2013, two men died after falling from buildings in the capital Malé during attempted robberies.

In January 2014, a 27-year-old man fell from the fifth floor of Maafanu Mundhooge after a break-in. He survived the fall with minor injuries after landing on a pile of sand.

Three days later, a 32-year-old woman fell from the fourth floor of Manchangoalhi Light Corner during an alleged robbery attempt.
