An Indian man who confessed to murdering a 31-year-old woman in Bangalore 12 years ago has been arrested while living under an assumed name in the Maldives.

A police spokesman confirmed to the Maldives Independent that an expatriate was arrested in Addu City with a court warrant on Tuesday but declined to reveal any further details.

AONews, a community news website in the southernmost atoll, identified the expat as Gururaj Kishore, an Indian citizen who had confessed to murdering his colleague Tanya Banerjee.

Prior to his arrest in the Maldives, Kishore had been working as a laboratory assistant at private clinics in Addu City for the past four years under the name of Baasker Srivesta, according to AONews.

Hithadhoo’s International Medical and Diagnostic Centre, where Kishore first worked, told the website that he was hired after he submitted all the required documents. In 2016, he was transferred to the AIMS Diagnostic Center in Feydhoo.

According to Indian media reports, Tanya Banerjee’s body was found on a highway near Sakleshpur on July 26, 2006, with multiple stab wounds. Kishore who was detained and interrogated by Bangalore police confessed to the crime.

It is unclear when he was released. According to online paper VFP, Kishore entered the Maldives with a fake passport under his alias Baasker Srivesta.

In 2010, a teacher who worked at Billabong High School in Malé was revealed as the transsexual alter-ego of John Mark Karr, a man who falsely confessed to murdering JonBenét Ramsey in the United States.
