Faris Maumoon MP has expressed skepticism in getting justice because of the “inconsistent constitutional system” in the Maldives, local media reported, as he went on trial for terrorism.

He appeared in court on Monday for a pretrial hearing and said there was no hope of a free trial. He asked Judge Ahmed Hailam to stop his speech if it was in contempt of court.

But the judge did not stop him and the detained lawmaker went on to underline the need to halt trials in a situation where there was doubt about over a fair verdict.

Hailam assured him that adequate time and opportunities would be given in the trial as it was the responsibility of the court to establish fairness.

Faris was given two days to appoint a lawyer and said he is worried about his detention conditions and getting enough time with lawyers.

He was arrested days after being released from custody on charges of bribing politicians and attempting to overthrow the government.

The opposition says his arrest is a political atrocity that proves how the government is influencing state institutions.

His father, former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, is also in custody on charges of terrorism and obstruction of justice.

Gayoom was also given two days to appoint a lawyer for his terrorism trial when summoned to court Sunday. The 80-year-old former dictator’s plea for transfer to house arrest was also rejected.

The duo have previously denied accusations of an alleged attempt to overthrow the government of President Abdulla Yameen, who is Gayoom’s half-brother and Faris’ uncle.
